Permitted development
Permitted development (PD) is work you may carry out without a full planning application because the law grants automatic consent, subject to limits on size, height, materials and location. Many rear extensions, loft dormers and outbuildings fall under PD in England if they meet the rules.
PD is not the same as Building Regulations approval, which you usually still need. Always check Article 4 directions and conservation-area limits before you start.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own permitted-development style rules. Do not assume England’s classes apply elsewhere.
