Listed building consent

Listed building consent is required for demolition, alteration or extension that affects the character of a listed building, inside or out. It is separate from planning permission, though both may be needed.

Carrying out works without consent is a criminal offence. Always check the list entry and seek advice early.

Listing and consent regimes are devolved: Historic England / local authorities in England; HES in Scotland; Cadw in Wales; HED in Northern Ireland.

Official source: Listed building consent (GOV.UK). Checked 27 October 2026.
